Il fallait que cette université soit représentative de la tradition marocaine. Ici nous avons pris le parti de considérer que la seule véritable tradition au Maroc était la modernité. Plutôt qu’une architecture nostalgique, nous avons constitué une taxinomie de typologies, à travers l’histoire et la géographie qui sont devenues les « briques » élémentaires d’une composition urbaine très ouverte et libre. L’ambiguïté entre un bâtiment et un tissu urbain est cultivée jusque dans la définition des circulations et l’organisation du programme. L’ensemble des « blocs » qui forment le bâtiment-ville est intériorisé, autorisant ainsi une écriture architecturale et matérielle sobre, générique et répétitive.

This university campus presents the morphology of a fortress town, whose compact density allows its users to access the entirety of the university rapidly by foot. This concentric geometry is an optimal form for a campus: key elements are equidistant from the center, thus resolving issues of hierarchy between departments. The spatial organization of the university follows a simple logic: academic buildings are organized around the perimeter, encircling the social and residential spaces. The compact nature of the form bestows an urban density and energy upon the campus while rendering it completely pedestrian-friendly.
