Ce projet de réhabilitation de quatre caravansérails de la Médina de Fès s’inscrit dans un vaste programme de modernisation de la production artisanale, en particulier la production polluante et toxique de la dinanderie. Pour ce programme cofinancé par l’état marocain et l’état américain, nous avons eu la charge de la réhabilitation de ces quatre fondouks, la transformation de la grande place Lalla Ydouna, la réalisation de nouvelles infrastructures de production ainsi que la consolidation d’une partie des murailles et de l’arsenal. Le périmètre de ce projet dépasse très largement le simple exercice architectural. La réhabilitation est en effet l’aboutissement d’un long processus à la fois social, par l’implication des familles, environnemental par les dispositifs de dépollution, mais également technique et patrimonial.

The rehabilitation of the four Caravanserails of the Fez Medina is a multidisciplinary endeavor that is equal parts urban design, restoration, and landscape. Focusing specifically on the city’s copper work industry, the project tackles the morphology, the physical displacement, and the environmental impact associated with this artisanal activity. Through the rehabilitation of structures dating from the 14th-17th century as well as the construction of a new building, the project aims to restructure the contemporary practice of copper work in Fez. At the same time, OUALALOU + CHOI piloted the restructuring of the Place Lalla Ydouna, the principal entry to the Fez Medina. This 25,000 m² plaza housing artisanal and industrial functions will soon welcome cultural and touristic activities.
