En plein cœur du quartier latin à Paris, au 115 Boulevard Saint Michel, le nouveau Centre des Cultures du Maroc a été conçu comme une accrétion de volumes dans la profondeur de la parcelle et dans toute sa hauteur. Une architecture qui est autant composée par ses pleins que par ses vides. Pour ce nouveau bâtiment, nous voulions proposer un projet qui soit à la fois profondément parisien et intimement marocain. Nous avons cherché non pas à imposer une écriture d’un autre temps ou d’un autre lieu, nous nous sommes intéressés aux expériences communes des traditions urbaines marocaines et du tissu parisien. Le bâtiment sera l’opportunité de penser le motif non pas dans les surfaces intérieures comme le voudrait la tradition, mais s’interprètera dans la peau du bâtiment. Le projet s’exprime par familiarité et réminiscence plutôt que par la forme et les signes.

On a narrow site in the Quartier Latin of Paris, the new Cultural Center of Morocco is composed of an accretion of volumes in an architecture that is composed as much by it voids as by its solids. The project experiments with the perception of space as it compresses and dilates through the site, simultaneously evoking the medieval streets of Paris and those of the medina of Fez. The public amenities located on the ground floor create a porosity which invites the public into and through the site. The façade is a marquetry of glass composed of variations on a single module, with shifting degrees of opacity and inclination. Thus, the different programs (the cultural center occupies the lower half of the building and offices are located in the upper half) share a common architectural identity.
