The Balima Hotel is famous for hosting intellectual, artistic, and political circles in the capital for the past 50 years. The rehabilitation of the hotel ventures to revive this tradition by opening up the entire ground floor to create an urban “living room” which invites the public to enter, linger, and interact with one another. Its large terrace, adjoining the street, blurs the threshold between public space and the communal space of the hotel, further highlighting the building’s porous nature. Though the building’s urban presence has been redefined, the rehabilitation respects the architectural character of this building sited in a city designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.
