Departing from standard typologies employed in urban hotels, this project explodes the hotel block into several intimate pavilions that create a unique skyline within a singular project. Based on the typology of the courtyard, the pavilions interconnect in ways that form exterior courtyards of various scales. This collection of pavilions acts as a perforated fortress, accessible from the street while protecting a larger garden within. Inspired by the purity of line and crystalline forms perfected by Baccarat, the façade’s double skin consists of a fine lacework of columns which play with effects of opacity and transparency. The articulation of volumes creates an ambiguous scale between the domestic and urban, orchestrated to provide moments of discovery at each turn. From narrow spaces that open into courtyards, from dark spaces to light, the project is a play on contrasts: parts to whole, mass to skeleton, shadow to light.
